But in high school we went our separate ways. Doug focused on music, skateboarding, and snowboarding. Kellena spent time dancing, cheerleading, and playing soccer. We saw each other in our art classes and the hallways.

After high school graduation, our paths moved further apart – Doug went to college in Atlanta and Kellena to Rochester. We caught up with each other once in a great while. One of those times was when Doug visited Kellena in Boston. The weekend was filled with sightseeing and exploring, even witnessing a wedding proposal in Boston Commons. But, our relationship remained just friends.

Kellena moved to Washington, DC, after graduating college. Again Doug decided to visit her for a sightseeing weekend – this one included visits to the National Museum of Natural History and the Library of Congress. We always had fun when we were together and soon found ourselves meeting up whenever we were both home in Lockport. Whether it was Christmas shopping for Jerome (Doug’s cat), having lunch, or playing pool, it was great to spend time catching up with an old friend.
In January of 2006 Kellena moved to Paris, France, for a 5-month academic program. When she received an email from Doug expressing his interest to visit her in Paris, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. But, when we saw each other for the first time in the City of Love, something was different. The timing was perfect – we had gone our separate ways, been true to ourselves, followed our dreams, and Life led us back to each other. We fell in love (again) that beautiful spring weekend in Paris, and knew we were meant to spend the rest of our lives together. We even saw the Eiffel Tower together, just as the middle school note predicted.

On November 15th, 2006, Doug surprised Kellena with a wedding proposal at the Rainbow Grill at the top of Rockefeller Center. Now, we live in our cozy studio apartment in New York City with Jerome, the cat. Doug works at Thomas Publishing as Manager of Web Development and is the owner of a multimedia design company called aBlueNamedRed.com. Kellena is finishing a Master of Science in Real Estate Development program at Columbia University. We are planning to move back to Western New York in the next year.

Thanks for reading our long-awaited love story. We hope that it reminds everyone to be true to yourself and to trust Life. Remember that it’s about the journey, not the destination.
